千葉県多古町の古民家改修 その1. Old house renovation 1.

千葉県は香取郡多古町にある日蓮宗の古刹、日本寺（にちほんじ）にさる縁から関わる事になり、一年ほど住み込みでお手伝いをすることになった。この一年でその縁はさらに拡がり、日本寺境内わきと言っていい場所にある古い民家を譲り受けることになった。久しぶりの投稿になるが、これからしばらくこの古民家の改修について、記録に残しておこうと思う。

By some connection with the chief priest of an old temple, I lived in the old housing part of the temple for over a year.  The temple is called Nichihon-ji Temple of Nichiren sect in Tako town, Chiba prefecture, with 700 years of history with some historical building facilities in its large territory.  Now I am building up new relationship with the people around here, and by chance, I was asked to use and live in an old house, which has been uninhabited for over 10 years.  I am now working on its renovation, and here I will be documenting the process of renovation in series.

住み手は既に別の土地に移り、部落の縁故の方が管理していたものの、10年以上人が暮らしていない古民家とその広大な敷地は荒れ放題になっていた。1500平米の裏庭は下草が茂り、土地境界の竹やぶが敷地を浸食、家の中にまで竹が生え、屋根を突き破っている有り様だった。

The owner of the house has already moved to other city with no plan for coming back.  The relative of the owner lives across the house and has managed and maintained the house, although the uninhabited house and its large front/backyard were utterly ruined and neglected.  The backyard with 1500sqm land space is completely covered by underbrush, while bamboo trees at the boader of the territory is invading the territory, even growing within the house, penetrating the roof.

家の改修については、日本寺の一部改修工事を請け負ってくれた大工の棟梁に依頼した。ただ、家本体の改修に入る前に、家の前庭と裏庭の荒れた土地を何とかすることが先決だった。広大な裏庭の下草を刈り、高く伸びる竹を切り倒し、屋根にかかる木々の枝を落とし、ごみを処理するーーそれだけで2ヶ月かかってしまった。

For the renovation of the house, I asked the master carpenter who did some renovation/wooden work at Nichihonji.  However, before startig the renovation of the house itself, we had to work on the neglected land by mowing the underbrush, cutting down those tall bamboo trees, or branches of the trees over the roof—it took full 2 months just to do so.

ようやく今月に入り、本格的に家の改修工事に入ることができた。

基本的にお金をかけることができないため、最近人気のある「古民家再生」といったレベルの改修工事ではないことはあらかじめお伝えしておかねばならない。また一気に完成させるのではなく、長い時間をかけてあちこち直し、形にしていくことになる。

Finally, we could move on to the renovation of the house from this month.  (December)  Although this is a renovation project, I have to note that this is not the kind of “old house revitalization” popular among people in Japan with big budget.  It can not be completed soon, taking time to finish up by fixing here and there.

米処として昔から豊かな土地に暮らしてきた地元の人たちにとってみれば、「本当に住めるのか」「立て直したほうがいいだろう」といった感想が口をつくような家ではある。ただ、今やこうした空き家が多くなり、さらに増えていくであろう田舎にとっては考えていかなければならない現実でもある。いくつかこの地域にある空き家を見た中で、平屋で、大きすぎず小さすぎない程よい大きさのこの古民家は、何とか自分が手を入れることができそうな気がした。

For people in the town grown up in a wealth of rice crop say, “can you really live there?” or “it’s better rebuilding completely”.  However, it is also a reality that now there are many uninhabited houses in town with its number increasing―and we need to think about the issue seriously.  As I looked around some uninhabited houses in this town, I found this particular one with a potential to be renovated with limited budget and skill, as it has only one level with reasonable size.

広大な裏庭に点在する大きな栗の木、椿、柚子、檜、梅その他の木々が、程よい日の射す林になり、多小傾斜のある敷地西側にはすっと伸びる竹が連なっている。前庭には木蓮や山茶花、梅や桑の木が植えられているものの、まだ大きく開けており、時間をかけてランドスケープデザインを手がけていくこともできる。静かな住宅街の雰囲気のある部落だが、ここはどこか山荘風のイメージを描くことができ、住宅街の暮らしと自然の中の暮らしを両立させることができるだろう。時間はかかったものの、荒れた敷地を整備する作業はデスクワークにはない心地よい疲れを与えてくれる。

Trees scattered around the large backyard―chestnut, camellia, citrus, apricot and others―produces a comfortably lit and shaded grove, while the sloped west side of the territory extends with lines of bamboo trees.  Front yard is planted with magnolia, camellia, plum and mulberry trees, while it is still quite open to be landscaped with various design.  The house is situated within a quiet residential part in the town, while this particular house and its territory can be viewed as a mountain cottage-like atmosphere, with balanced lifestyle between a residential neighborhood and a house within a nature.  I already enjoyed a good fatigue from the outdoor works not felt by the desk work.
